About Earth's Promise Farm
Earth's Promise Farm is a small 45-acre family farm located in Shelbyville, KY, just 28 miles east of Louisville. We are USDA certified organic and our specialty is pastured poultry. We run a produce CSA and sell at numerous farmers markets in and around the Louisville and Shelbyville areas. Including the owners of the farm, Sandee Corlett and Jason Tucker, there are only three full time employees who tend to the fields.
We are new to farming, so we tell people that to farm organically we don't have to unlearn anything, we just have to learn. We are not among the small farmers that reject organic certification because of the perception that the USDA is trying to close down small family farms. Instead, we believe that the small family farmer must seek organic certification in order to preserve organics. If the small family farmer abandons organics, the only organic producers left will be big agribusiness. We've had six years on this farm raising an organic garden for our family but 2006 was our first year that we could call ourselves "farmers."
We have a passive solar and active solar building that is our farm office. We hope to add a certified kitchen in the office soon so that we can produce value-added products that we can sell to restaurants and through stores. (The current legislation allows farmers to produce certain value-added products to sell directly to consumers. In order to sell to stores one must have a seperate kitchen-not their home kitchen-that is certified.) We are developing a sustainable buying club in order to advance the formation of a community of people who are focused on sustainability in the greater Louisville area. Please join us! Earth's Promise Farm is a small family farm dedicated to sustainable farming practices. We are certified organic by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. We produce pastured poultry that we take to a certified organic USDA processor. We have had several customers say that our chicken is the best they have ever tasted! One friend says our chickens have only one bad day. Our chickens are put on the field as soon as they are old enough and then they are moved often. We do not use the "chicken tractor" method, as this is a form of caged production and we wish to raise the most responsible food possible. They eat grasses and clover (they love clover) and bugs. They like wild blackberries, and they prefer the blackberry brambles to their tents for cover. These are happy chickens.
